LED Hoop Maker Kit

.

There are three main parts to an LED hoop.

1. Tubing
2. Power system
3. LEDs

* By ordering this kit you agree to the terms described in the disclaimer at the bottom of this page.

Step One: Select and Purchase Tubing

I no longer sell tubing, so this part you’ll have to buy separately.

There are many types of tubing.
Two types that I recommend are Rigid and Flexible.

Rigid Tubing

The Rigid type of tubing is common for LED hoops. If you plan to use your hoop to perform tricks and fast reversals, use this type of tubing. It is available in 100 ft rolls at usplastics.com part number 58018.
And shorter lengths at McMaster.com part number 50375K55. (note purchase at least 25ft since some of the tubing may be kinked in the box)

Flexible Tubing

The Flexible tubing is great for making a collapsible hoop . Some don’t mind its flexibility and still pull off tricks, and also enjoy the comfortable feel and natural ability to grip your body without tape. But others still find it too slow for tricks and reversals.
It is available in 100 ft rolls at usplastics.com part number 58008.
And shorter lengths at McMaster part number 5181K11.

.

To calculate how much tubing you need:

Take the diameter of the hoop you would like to make
and multiply that by 3.14,
round up,
then divide by 12.
Example: 40 inches x 3.14 =  125.6 inches
126 inches /12 inches =  10.5 feet

Step Two: Choose a Power System

.

1. Disposable lithium battery:

This is the easiest to assemble. the battery lasts about 5 hours of continuous use, and can be easily replaced for a new one. Replacement batteries cost $10. Before  choosing this battery system be sure to review the assembly instructions.

When you are ready you can select an LED combination from the drop list below. Or choose “none” then “add to cart” and then purchase select any LEDs you want from the LED page.

This kit includes:

One Lithium Battery
12 feet of paired wire
One Slide Switch
One Tube Connector

LED options

 .

2. AA battery module:

A special circuit allows you to power LEDs with only one AA battery. You can use alkaline or rechargeable. A single battery will last about 3 hours and can be swapped out with a new one as needed. The battery fits into a convenient battery holder. Carry a few batteries with you and you’ll get hours of use when you are far from a power outlet. Popular for weekend festivals and desert festivals like burning man. You must use at least 7 LEDs with this system. More than 21 LEDs is not recommended. Slow changing LEDs may flicker when transitioning but its not very noticeable in the hoop.

Some soldering skill is required to link the special circuit to the switch and battery holder. Please REVIEW the instructions before choosing this system.
When you are ready you can select an LED combination from the drop list below. Or choose “none” then “add to cart” and then purchase select any LEDs you want from the LED page.

This kit includes:

AA circuit module
AA battery holder
12 feet of paired wire
One Slide Switch
One Tube Connector

LED options

.

3.  Rechargeable battery:

Installing this single rechargeable battery in your hoop gives you power for at least 5 hours. Recharges in only 1 hour with a small compact charger that plugs into a DC jack on the hoop tubing. Use it with flexible tubing to make a rechargeable collapsible hoop you never have to open. You must use at least 20 LEDs with this battery in order to avoid using resistors. This requires soldering of the DC Jack, switch and battery wires. You must read the instructions before choosing this system.

When you are ready you can select an LED combination from the drop list below. Or choose “none” then “add to cart” and then purchase select any LEDs you want from the LED page.

This kit includes:
One Rechargeable Battery
DC jack
Compact Quick Charger
12 feet of paired wire
One Slide Switch
One Tube Connector

LED options

_

.

Step Three: Choose LEDs

-

If you added a Power system to your cart and chose “none” for your LED option, you can find other LEDs on the LED page.

what connector should be used for the flexible tubing? will you have a kit for the collapsible hoop anytime soon?

  2. prodmod on November 26th, 2008

It uses the larger connector .814 x 1.
I don’t have the entire kit for one price but you can just order any of the maker kits above and any extra LEDs if you need them, and then order the 10.5feet of tubing on the flexible tubing page here

  3. Janelle on December 13th, 2008

i really want to make myself an led hoop with your kits. do you have a total package with tubing and everything, with the rechargeable battery? if you dont could u make an exception and give me some pricing? thank you

  4. prodmod on December 13th, 2008

i don’t have anymore stiff tubing right now. i only have the flexible version. if you want that its faster just to buy the parts you need from my site like i mentioned in the previous comment. it doesn’t get cheaper than that. Otherwise you can buy the stiff tubing hoop kit at makershed.com and the rechargeable kit from me. but that’s 2x shipping cost.

  7. Amanda on March 25th, 2009

Why is the rechargeable option here more expensive than the rechargeable battery upgrade on the other page?

  8. prodmod on March 25th, 2009

the items on this page are maker kits. They have all the parts of the LED hoop except for the tubing. The other page you are referring to is probably the accessories page? There you have only the rechargeable Upgrade Kit. The Upgrade Kit is when you already have the standard hoop kit or already made your hoop and want to add the rechargeable battery to it.
In short, the LED Hoop Maker Kit Rechargeable: Core is more expensive because it comes with more parts

  9. Rae on April 1st, 2009

I was trying to add the rechargeable kit to my cart, but for some reason the button isn’t working :P

  10. prodmod on April 1st, 2009

I seemed to have messed up the code, but its fixed now.

  11. Alicia on April 18th, 2009

so do the AA battery and rechargable kits only work with the flexible tubing or is the rigid the same size? I’m not sure what my options are with that rigid tubing…

  12. prodmod on April 18th, 2009

the flexible tubing and rigid tubing I list above are both the same size. They are about 0.814″x1″. So they both accept the AA battery holder and the rechargeable upgrade. If you use a thinner tubing, like 0.6″x.75″ then the rechargeable kit will not fit. And instead of an AA battery you can try a AAA battery, but it’s a tight fit and one AAA wont last very long. You can put two AAA batteries in series to get more light time, but it takes more room and might be hard to change out.

  13. Katina on April 21st, 2009

I am real short and my regular hoop has a diameter of 35″ Can I Cut the tubing to make it fit my size? If I do cut the tubing are there any modifications That I would need to make to the spacing of the LEDs? I would make do with a larger hoop but it hits the ground when I booty bump and forward chest hoop.

  14. prodmod on April 22nd, 2009

yes you can cut the tubing. You can either use less LEDs or space them closer together. to figure out the spacing you take the circumference = 3.14 x 35inches = 110 inches. Subtract about 6 inches for the connector and battery = 104. then divide by number of LEDs. 104/21 = 5 inches. its just an estimate.

  15. Laura on April 23rd, 2009

got any of the rigid tubing in stock now??! I really DO NOT want flexi tubing.

  16. prodmod on April 23rd, 2009

as stated up top, You can also buy shorter lengths (of rigid tubing) at mcmaster.com part number 50375K55.
just be sure to get more length than you need so you can cut it down to size and not worry about the warped ends

  17. Laura on April 24th, 2009

OK- so if I order the rigid tubingfrom mcmaster……but I get the rest of the supplies from you, do you offer a connector for sale?

  18. Laura on April 24th, 2009

OH DUH– just found my own answer :) Hey, thanks for the quick response…….diggin’ the attentive customer service!

  19. Laura on April 27th, 2009

got that wholesale quote for me yet– we are DROOLIN over here in anticipation??!! Please email me asap! Thanks!

  20. Rae on April 28th, 2009

What kind of wire do you use? I may need to redo my lights and getting new wire may seem like the easiest option, instead of trying to re-use the wire I currently have. Thanks!

  21. samantha on June 4th, 2009

How heavy are the finished 21 led hoops compared to 160 and 100 psi hoops? I have been learning on a 160 psi, but need to move onto a 100 psi. I really want to make an led hoop but I am worried it will end up too heavy. What do you think?

  22. prodmod on June 9th, 2009

Rae, the wire is simply 22 AWG paired speaker wire. you can find it at Radio Shack

  23. prodmod on June 9th, 2009

    Samantha,

a finished prodmod hoop is 1 lb 5 oz.
a typical 160 psi hoop with no lights weighs about 1 lbs.

so figure that the prodmod hoop is 5 oz more.

  24. Jenny on June 17th, 2009

    Hello Prodmod
I just ordered the rechargable LED kit and Im trying to order the piping now. Do I have to use 1″ or can I fit all the guts in 3/4″ piping?

    THANK YOUUUUUU!!!
    Jen

  25. Maria on June 19th, 2009

    Hi,
I am looking into buying the rechargable kit with LED lights but I was hoping I could also order flexible tubing from your site. The link for the pre-cut tubing was broken. Do you still offer that? I do not have use for a 100 feet of tubing :( Do you offer tape for the LED hoop as well or could you tell me a website where they sell those. Thanks! Hope moving goes well!

  26. Hanna Banana on June 20th, 2009

So if i order the rechargeable kit with the 21 slow change does the 10.5 feet of flexible tubing come with it because i cant figure out how to get the tubing included in my basket and also i would like to get an extra foot of tubing i do better with bigger hoops please let me know i would like to order asap but i also am getting this for my birthday and i was wondering if there was anything i could do to get it shipped before june 27th thank u please let me know asap

  27. Hanna Banana on June 20th, 2009

is the 21 slow change the 7 different colors change on the led page :These LEDs automatically and slowly cycle through the colors: Red, Green, Blue, yellow, teal, purple, white. because thats the ones i wanted i just wanna know the easiest way to order the rechargeable flexible tubing with an extra foot to play with and those specific lights

  28. Krysten on June 30th, 2009

can i use 30leds with a single rechargable?

  29. Kelly on September 24th, 2009

    Hi,
I live in the UK. Any idea how I can order the tubing over here. Ive tried looking, but cant seem to find a company =[

  30. Katina on November 4th, 2009

do you not sell the flexible tubing in your kits any more?

  31. prodmod on November 4th, 2009

that is correct. I no longer sell tubing. But the vendors I list at the top of this page are recommended.

  32. cole on November 12th, 2009

are you currently shipping? i would like to buy the kit that includes the AA module. is pay-pal the only method you use? are the 21 LED hoops going to be signifigintly dimmer? how many lights do you recommend using? also, does it matter that the different colored LED’s have different values? how about a price for the module, variable colored LED’s(how ever many you would recommend for one hoop) and the light grommets. or can i get the lights at raido shack?
thanks for taking the time to respond, Cole.

  33. Paige on November 21st, 2009

Hello, i am trying to decide between getting the AA battery module or the rechargable battery. I need an opinion. Does using just the one AA battery make the LED’s not as bright?

  34. prodmod on November 21st, 2009

    Cole -
    1. yes I am shipping
    2. Paypal is the only method but with it you can use any major credit card
    3. My ProdMod LED hoops are based on 21 LEDs, so I’m not sure what it would be dimmer than? Some of the systems above should not use less than 20 LEDs, unless you choose to use resistors.

    4. All of the LED offered on this site right now are of the same or similar voltage rating, so they do not have different values. But if you used Red, Orange or Yellow then you would need to use a resistor for each one of those.

5.a. Each kit above can be purchased with 21 color change LEDs. The prices are listed above.

5.b. There are no light grommets in my kit. all the parts you need are included except for the tubing. It sounds like you got some information from a different site? you should review the Instructions before you buy anything!

Can I use 7 UV LED lights with 14 of the Slow Changing LED lights on the AA battery module? Will there be any defects or will the lighting work properly?

  36. Clairity on December 15th, 2009

Hi. I thought you should know that mcmaster.com does sell the foldable tubing. It’s part number 5181K11 and it is available by the foot. I’ve been using it for the last 5 months and it’s great!
    Clairity

  37. prodmod on December 15th, 2009

Thanks for the tip Clairity! They must have added this item recently. I will update my list above

  38. Leslie on December 16th, 2009

So what colors are the “21 slow” and “21 fast”?

  39. prodmod on January 3rd, 2010

the colors are best viewed through a video on the LED page
    http://prodmod.com/buy/leds/

  40. amber on January 13th, 2010

I was told by someone that you need to use resistors, but I was looking at your kits to buy, and no resistors, why? do you really need them?

  41. prodmod on January 28th, 2010

short explanation is that the LEDs I use without resitors have a voltage rating around 3.2 to 3.6V, and the batteries I use are also in the range. Because of this it is very difficult to provide the LED with too much current. If my battery was 4 or 5 or 6V then I would need a resistor to reduce the current to the LED and prevent it from burning out.

  42. Christine on March 8th, 2010

Can I purchase the 3/4″ tubing instead of the 1″ and be able to fit all the wires and parts inside?

  43. Krysten on March 23rd, 2010

how many leds can i hook up to a single battery? im not actually making a hoop, but i want to make a battery powered uv led rope light.

  44. Bridie on May 20th, 2010

Do you have an l.e.d kit that will work with 1/2″ tubing?..my tubing of choice is 1/2″ ID and 5/8 OD..

  45. AndreaR on July 3rd, 2010

YAYYY I just ordered everything I need to make a hoop!!! So excited…I will be waiting by my mailbox until it arrives : )

  46. Jillery on August 17th, 2010

Where can I find “the larger connector .814 x 1.”? All of the connectors on McMaster Carr, Home Depot and Lowe’s are for 3/4″ or 1″ ID tubing.

  47. prodmod on August 17th, 2010

The 3/4 inch coupling is the one that fits
